Snowy Trees

We’re having a heat wave here in Ontario and I’m busy making Christmas cards! Too funny. This week’s challenge at www.alwaysplayingwithpaper.blogspot.ca was to make a Christmas card using white and green and wood grain. Well, I have Tim Holtz’s pine tree die so I got busy and die cut three trees. I figured I would likely mess one up so why not die cut three. Turned out I didn’t mess any of them up so I went ahead and made three cards. Here is the first one I made.

I made the card base from green cardstock and cut a piece of designer paper to fit, leaving the 1/8” edge. I don’t have a wood grain embossing folder but I found one of those old thick Fiskars embossing plates that sort of had a wood grain and ran it thru the Cuttlebug on a piece of brown cardstock that I had misted with water and was pleasantly surprised to see how well it embossed. I have a whole slew of those and I never use them but that could change real quick now that I know they work. The tree was run thru a Tim Holtz pine embossing folder and then I added some liquid appliqué and glitter and heat embossed it. I know, I know you are suppose to wait for the liquid appliqué to dry over night – not gonna happen here! It was attached with think dimensional dots from Paper Wishes. The sentiment was stamped with an Inkadinkado stamp on white and I notched the corners with a punch. I used a label maker template from Paper Wishes to draw the green line around the sentiment.

I liked it but the more I looked at the brown the more it didn’t look like wood grain. So I made another card.

I turned a piece of scrap paper from another project over and lo and behold the reverse side was wood grain! Amazing coincidence for sure. This time for the snow I used some fabric paint that was sitting on the shelf and of course, some glitter. The sentiment is a peel and stick. Well, this one should meet the criteria but I had one tree left over so instead of trying to file it away somewhere, I made a third card.

I had this piece of red paper and the small piece of paper left over from the two previous cards so I added two green strips to the white patterned paper and glued it to the red. Then glued it all to the card base and added the tree. At first I just glittered the tree but it looked blah so more white fabric paint and more glitter added. Much better. I decided the top needed something so I added the peel and stick sentiment and fancy scroll up there.

So, three more Christmas cards made. So much fun!

Cheers

Violet

  5. Those embossing plates are such a great way to add texture, aren't they? I haven't added water to my paper before embossing so I should give that a try - thanks for the idea! Love the TH die you used and the snow effect you added - so clever!
