Lavender Card

 

Brrrrr. We have been under a cold adversary for the 3^rd day. And I mean cold. Last night it was -19C (-2F) but felt like -28C (-18F). We haven’t left the house all week. But tomorrow it will be back to more normal temperatures at -9C (15F).

I’m switching from posting the cards using the Big Bloom flower die to a bit of a mixed media card using products from Stamperia’s Lavender set I ordered through Stamp Art in London, ON.

The card base is from my stash and it just happened to fit in with the other lavender colours. All the pieces were hand cut and the edges inked with a dark lavender ink. The tag was attached to the sponged-looked whitish piece which was glued to the lavender piece. The bird was also hand cut and then attached to the top of the card. The sentiment is a black peel-off. This was definitely a quick and easy card.

A quick and easy card

 

This is the start of our Thanksgiving weekend. We have been enjoying above warmer than usual temperatures for the last few weeks although cold at night. We even had a touch of frost the other night. However, we are saddened by the destruction from the hurricanes in the USA. The damage was incredible.

Last month I treated myself to a paper pack from Stamperia and I just love it. I bought the Lavender one. Here is one card I made from it.

 

I cut the background from one of the 8x8 pages and glued it to the brown card base. The butterfly is from my stash. The butterfly trail is gold peel-offs; as is the sentiment. This was such a quick and easy card to make…once I got over the shock of cutting into the paper!

A Repurposed Card

 So hot and humid here it’s ridiculous! I swear it’s like walking into a furnace if you go outside - around 100F and not a breath of air. More thunderstorms expected as well.

I know some card makers have a favourite type of card they make - multi-layers, mixed media, clean and simple, quick and easy, etc. I do not have a favourite and I make what ever appeals to me that particular day. Today’s card would be considered clean and simple maybe or quick and easy? Not sure what category it would fall into but here is.

 

The flowers are from a greeting card that I repurposed. The two small butterlfies were part of the design. I die cut the frame and placed it over the greeting card to get the best interesting part and then hand cut the card to fit under the frame. It was then glued to a white card base. The larger butterfly was up higher in the card so I hand cut it and glued it partly over the frame and partly on the focal image just to add some interest. The sentiment is a gold peel-off.

Wild Flower Card

 It’s been quite a week here again in Ontario with the weather all over the place. The rain and thunderstorms continued but we dodged the tornado….and we were close to having frost the last two nights. Its not unusual to have to turn  the furnace off and on during April but usually in May the furnace is off until we turn the A/C on in June or July. We had to run the furnace a bit the last two mornings just to get the chill out of the house. We did enjoy coffee in the backyard today - first time this year!

 Today’s card was a bit of an experiment - nothing new there, right! But I did like how it turned out.

I love the wild flowers die set - I think from Tim Holtz - and I’m trying to use them more often. I also have the jar stamp that I seldom used so I decided to put them both to use on one card. The flowers were all die cut from white cardstock and then  various colours of inks were used to colour them. I like this look better than die cutting them from solid cardstock…except the black ones in the background. I had to hand cut the vase as there is no die for it but that’s okay. It was easy to hand cut and I actually enjoy hand cutting things. I tried laying the vase and flowers on a variety of paper for the background and rejected all of it. I didn’t want a busy background so I kept it super simple but using a dark blue card base and the came colour cardstock die cut with a stitched rectangle die. A bakers twine bow as added and the stamped sentiment on a die cut banner was added.

Sympathy Card

 This has been a very upsetting year so far. Hopefully, it will start getting better now. Let’s see, we lost Joe’s sister in January; terrible weather that set off my brain disorders all winter and spring; Joe had a cold that lasted 2 weeks; last week I had a 2 hour dental procedure for a risky root canal…success, he saved the tooth; and then this week it was very bad and sad as my brother died. Now, mind you, he was 85 and has been paralyzed from the arm pits down since he was about 33 so he has not had an easy life but he never got down about it. His wife was expecting their 5 child when he was in the motorcycle accident (that was not his fault) and it changed their whole life. He ran his own body shop and wrecking yard until he retired. Unfortunately the last few years were filled with health problems and his body finally gave up. We shall miss him but he is now free of the wheelchair. May he rest in peace.

 So in honour of my brother, I am posting a sympathy card today.

 

I’ve had this little rose stamp for years and seldom ever use it but I think that is about to change. It was coloured with alcohol ink markers. For the background I took a piece of cardstock and splattered red and blue and I think gold watered down ink on it.Then the piece with the focal image was done the same way. I just covered up the flowers so they didn’t get splattered. I used a stitched rectangle die to cut it out and glued it to a piece of gold cardstock and then to a piece of royal blue cardstock that was also die cut with a larger stitched die. I wanted some gold on the front of the card so I added the gold strip but it wasn’t enough. So I added a piece of double sided adhesive to the back of another gold strip and ran it through the lattice die. I punched out all the centres but kept them to be used on another card - some day! (famous last words). I liked that look so I added the focal image and then the gold sentiment.

Power Poppy Card

 Were you able to see the eclipse where you live? It was a once in a life time event and I’m so glad we were able to see it - and that the clouds moved on just before lunch. Some areas were not so lucky and it was very cloudy. We returned our eclipse glasses to the library today. They will be donated to a group who sends them to poorer countries when they have an eclipse.

Today I’m posting a card using a stamp from Power Poppy. They have awesome flower stamps, including digital stamps. 

                                              

This tulip stamp is one of my favourites. I don’t usually colour them that dark but I rather like it….and I happened to have a card base the same colour. I like to make my own card bases so I have quite a variety of them.  Once this was stamped and coloured I trimmed it down to fit on the right side of the card and added that gold peel-off strip on the left. Then more gold peel-offs were used - the corners and the sentiment and even the gold strip under the sentiment. Then the gold gems were added. 

That’s all for a lovely warm spring day - got out and did some gardening this afternoon - but tomorrow is going to be a rainy day. Time to stay inside and make cards and quilt.

Sympathy Card

 It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Unfortunately we have had a family member that took a turn for the worst and is going into palliative care. So, postings will be few and far between for a while. However, I have this morning free so I thought I would share a post. Strangely enough I’ve been making sympathy cards since the New Year.

 

 I had four jars stamped on velum and never used them. So, I hand cut around one and  coloured the back of it with a blue Bic alcohol pen to add water. Then I used some Tim Holtz wild flowers and other die cuts that were in my ‘in case I need them one day’ stash and positioned them behind it. When I don’t feel like creating cards or scrapbooking, I just sit and die cut and colour various elements for future use. It comes in very handy. Then of course came the problem of how to glue it to the cardstock panel I had die cut with a stitched edge, which is the same as the card base.

Seeing as I had four jars stamped, I decided to add some wide double sided adhesive to one of them and then hand cut it. It was glued to the back of the decorated one and I used a black Bic pen to go around the edges. Then I dabbed glue on the back of the flowers, removed the backing from the jar and glued it all down. A double bow was tied and added to the top of the jar. The fish tail banner was die cut and stamped. Small pieces of double side dimensions were added to the ends of the banner before it was glued down. This kept it straight as it was going over the jar. Otherwise the ends would probably bend down.

That’s all for a frigid cold Thursday. We have been under a record breaking cold spell here in Ontario - and through a lot of the Northern Hemisphere and it will not end until next Monday. The low, with the wind chill, some nights were -28C (-18F). I hate winter. That is all.

 Rain! Rain, rain and more rain. Its been raining here since sometime in the middle of the night and hasn’t stopped. But it could be worse, the areas north and east of us are getting rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain… it changes from one to the other at will which makes driving very dangerous. At least we don’t have to shovel rain! All this rain is coming from a Texas Low! Yes, we get a lot of our weather from a Texas Low which is strong wind that picks up moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and follows the jet stream to Ontario. This is also why we get the aftermath of a lot of hurricanes. A little weather info for you!

Now on with the card of the day!

                                    

  This card came about one bit at a time. I had no idea what I was going to make when I started out. I bought a package of various flowers and butterflies from Stamp Art in London, ON (awesome on-line or in person shopping store) and I really liked this one. Roses are my favourite flower. I had some beige cardstock that who knows where it came from and it was cut about 4 x 6 so I trimmed them all down to 4 x 5.25. Then I used a text stamp to stamp some words to get rid of all the beige. I think I stamped this in Distress Ink Rusty Hinge. I didn’t want it even as it was just for some background dimension so I didn’t use an acrylic block. I just tapped on ink here and there. The edges were inked with the same ink. I found this card base in my stock and thought it would look nice with the roses. I wanted something behind the roses so I twirled some gold thread around and glued it behind the roses. Then I stamped the sentiment on a die cut tag and called it finished.

Aqua Card Number 10

 It’s been awhile since my last post. Life has been busy and the computer kept acting like a brat and kept doing updates as soon as I wanted to use it… and when it wants to update, I have to let it or it slows down so much I can’t use it. Hopefully, life, and the computer, will co-operate better now.

 This is the last card I made in the 10 card series of using one entire paper pack. (Check back a few posts for the start of them and the explanation) It was a fun project I assigned myself and I did indeed use the entire paper pack except for some very small bits and pieces.  

                                               

 For this card I only had a few strips of paper left over, some not even long enough to go across the card. Solution? Glue them together and then placed them behind a stitched white panel with a circle die cut out! I actually liked this a lot better than I thought I would. I had one long piece so it did go across the width of the card at the bottom. Even the hand cut banner with the peel-off sentiment is from the paper pack. Once it was glued to the aqua card base, the butterfly that just happened to have aqua in its wings was glued on. I did not like the body of the butterfly so I replaced it with a die cut one using an old Memory Box die.

We enjoyed a 50^th wedding anniversary party for my son-in-law’s parents on Saturday - the card I made for them will be on the next post - and yesterday we spent another day photographing birds at Rondeau. Today is a day of rest except for laundry which also piled up.

A Quick and Easy Card

     BRRRRRR. Freezing cold again today. The temperatures is about -13C (8F) now and will dip lower overnight and it will feel like -20C (-4F)…. and it will be even colder on Friday before we get back up close to the freezing cut off mark. Brrrrr.

    Tonight I’m featuring a card that could be considered quick and easy.

                                      
    The stamped flowers come from a Stampin’ Up stamp set called Happy Watercolor. I was trying it out and stamped it and coloured it; liked it just fine and decided to use it in a card; and then started looking for paper to match. I know, I know, the professionals choose the paper first and then color the images to match. I’m not a professional so I can do it my way! I found some cardstock that almost matched the flowers perfectly (it pays to have a huge stash sometimes) and made a card base. Then I used a long stitched die to die cut the image and then a rectangle from the same cardstock as the card base to mount it on. The die cut image was left in the die as I sponged blue ink around the middle. This leaves a white border. TECHNIQUE - I have the old Sizzix magnetic platform but I seldom use it for die cutting - the images move sometimes. But, I use it all the time for the aforementioned technique. The magnetic platform holds the die in place as I sponge the middle and I never have to worry about it slipping. Works great!

    But I had no idea how to finish it and started flipping through the stash. I found this wood grain paper, no idea where it came from, and decided it would be a nice back ground. I cut it a bit smaller than the card base and glued it on and then the image. The black peel-off was glued to a piece of brown cardstock and it was added on the angle.

    It was a quick and easy card but I was pleased how it turned out.

Two Cards Today

 So far no accumulating snow here in this part of Ontario. We’ve had a few flurries but fortunately, it melted quickly. Suits me just fine.

Today I’m posting two cards because they started out with the same background, but finished differently.

  Both backgrounds are just two pieces of matching paper from my stash that I taped together at the back and then added a gold peel-off strip down the join. I’m back to using up the stash again.

Bird:

     For this card I stamped, coloured and hand cut the bird, the flowers and the leaves.. The branch was a die cut. Then it was a simple matter of attaching them and adding the peel-off sentiment.

Flowers:

I love this flower stamp and die set. I stamped and die cut several and the large one has a smaller one glued in the centre. I flipped them over and ran a stylus over the back to give them some dimension so they don't lay flat on the card. Small gems were added to the centres of all of them. The leaves came with the set so they were stamped and die cut as well. Then, once they were arranged and glued on, the peel-off sentiment was attached.

I think these will fall into the quick and easy category but I do like how they turned out.

A Dragonfly Card

 This time of the year is when I get more quilting, card making and scrapbooking completed. It’s usually too cold for me to be outside for very long. Today’s card is a combination of using an old greeting card, ink, die cuts and a stamp.

                     
    The background is from an old greeting card. Green ink was sponged heavier around the edge, than the middle. This brings the eye to the centre of the card…. a very old but useful tip.

Then the dragonfly was stamped. I always have trouble lining up this stamp but this time it worked out very well. Then The two banners were die cut and the sentiment stamped on the green one - which is just a left over piece from the card. It was then mounted on a light green card base. I usually have tons of layers but this time I kept it very simple.

Quick and Easy - sort of

     On the weekend it was so hot it was like a July day; today, its cold and rainy to the point where Joe asked me to turn the furnace back on to get the chill out of the house. Yup, typical Ontario weather!

    Today’s card is one from a large die that I seldom know how to use. I sometimes cut everything but the sentiment off but this time, I decided to use it as it cuts.

                             

    The paper behind the die cut is some water colour paper that I coloured with Distress Inks and water. I love that soft look you can get that way. I just smear some Distress ink on any smooth surface, spritz with water, dip and move the paper and lift. Tim Holtz’s rule is if you look at it, you must dry it before lifting more ink. And that is one rule I follow - most of the time! The die cut sentiment was adhered to it; then to white cardstock; then to the wine cardstock; and then to the black card base. Then the flowers that sort of matched the colours in the background were added. This was a quick and easy card to put together once all the pieces were ready to go.

Flower Card

           It’s April 1 and Mother Nature is playing cruel tricks on us….cold and a few snow showers today. The snow showers didn’t last but a few minutes but in April, that’s still too long. More could be coming too! Grrrrr.

Today’s card was made using a Power Poppy stamp that was coloured with pencils and blended with gamsol.

 

This was the smallest stamp in the set. I’ve had it coloured for quite some time but never got around to finishing it. I like to sit and colour images while I’m watching hockey on television and I seem to have quite a pile ready to make into cards.

The dies are all various Spellbinder’s dies. Once the image was die cut, it was left in the die and blue ink was lightly sponged around the image which left the border white. If you have the Spellbinder’s magnetic platform, here’s a trick I use all the time. Place a piece of scrap paper on the magnetic platform and then the image that is still in the die. This will hold the image in place while you sponge the colour on and no worries about the image moving in the die and getting ink where you don’t want it. That magnetic platform is powerful. The brushes I use for light inking came from the make up aisle at The Dollar Tree…much cheaper than buying them from a craft store and they work just fine. The downside is they all have brown handles. So, I added a piece of coloured tape around the handle of each one so I know which one to grab for inking….one per colour family.

     Anyway, back to the card. Once the image was adhered to the black die cut and then onto the designer paper on the card front - from the stash so I have no idea where it came from. The tag was die cut and adhered with a gold brad. The sentiment is a gold peel-off.

A Dipped Background Card

 A rare Sunday night posting! I thought I better get a posting in while I had the chance. Last week was a bit of a train wreck for computer time so I thought I better post a card tonight in case tomorrow is busy again. Back in January the quilt guild called and said they found a box of batik fabric and asked if I could make some quilt tops from it. (We get a lot of fabric donated to us and we never know what's in the boxes until they are opened….and we have not been able to meet in the church because of COVID so its been hit and miss to have access to it. I said sure I’ll take the box. Well, the box turned out to be TOTE! Yikes! So, I was busy making quilt tops from it - two completed and turned in. Then on Friday, I had an appointment to get my eyes examined. I hate those drops they put in your eyes. I think I’m on the verge of being allergic to them. My eyes were sore and burning until almost late LAST NIGHT. Yeah, about 36 hours before they started to feel better. Glad its just once a year!

 So, all that coupled by the fact that it has been bitter cold which means my ‘lower studio’, which is the basement, is a little too cold to be sitting there crafting. Luckily I have a few cards made and ready to post. I can’t wait for spring! So, here’s today’s card.

                                     

The background is a piece of water coloured paper that I dipped in various Distress Inks and then set aside. I have several backgrounds waiting to be turned into cards. I had no idea what do do with it but then I saw this peel-off that I’ve had for years and decided it was time to use it. I trimmed the background to about 2 1/4” by 5”, or so, I probably didn’t measure it but it would be close to that. Then it was mounted on black and adhered to a deep purple card base which picked up the colour in the background. A left over strip from making the card base was glued on and a black peel-off sentiment and feather were added. Then those tiny little black  circle bits were added.

What is old is new again.

 Our brutal winter continues with more snow and cold weather. I cannot wait for spring to come! I’m just a 100% summer and hot weather person.

Today’s card was made using two very old dies - I think Memory Box but not sure. I’ve decided that everything that is old is new again and pulling out the old stamps and dies.

This was a very quick card to complete. The background is one piece of burgundy glued to a white card base. Then I die cut that trellis out of white and attached it easily because I had added double sided adhesive to the white cardstock first.  Check back next week to see how I used the little bits popped out on the trellis.

Next I did the same thing for the flowers - double sided adhesive on white cardstock and ran it through the Big Shot. After I sponged on the colours, it was attached over the trellis. Ranger hot pink pearl dimensional drops were added to the flowers and some on the background. They look blotchy in the photo but that’s because of the lighting. Then the gold peel-off sentiment and flower were added. Done!

Black and White

 Ahhh, winter in Ontario. Don’t like the weather - just wait a few hours and it will change! We have gone from bitter cold weather to it being above freezing today which means any snow or ice left around has been thawing; tonight it will start to rain and tomorrow it will change to snow and it may snow for over 24 hours. Bah Humbug! I hope it misses us but not likely.

 Whenever I buy a new stamp, I like to stamp it right away to make sure its okay. Sometimes I just stamp on old paper but sometimes I grab a piece of new cardstock. That’s what I did with this large background stamp…I think its 6” square. Then I set it aside. Once in awhile I would pull it out of my background stash and think, “What am I going to do with this?” and put it back! Finally, after weeks of moving it around, I decided to turn it into a card.   This is what I came up with.

                              
Unfortunately I always seem to need sympathy cards. So I took this background stamp and cut it down to 4 x 5.25 so it would fit on a standard A2 card but leave a border. I decided to stay with the black and white theme so the card itself is black. Before gluing it to the card base I cut a piece of black cardstock about 1/2” wide and stamped and embossed the sentiment in white. It was glued just under the middle of the background. Then it was glued to the card base and for once I quit at that point!  I decided it didn’t need anything else. It would qualify for clean and simple for sure.

Another Cold Day and a Card

 Its still bitter cold which is very unusual for this part of Ontario. Its been years since we can remember a winter this cold. I’m hoping for a very early spring to make up for it!

 

In the last post I posted three cards using an old Tim Holtz die. I die cut a piece of black to let the colour show through and they were mounted on a black card base. Today I’m using another die from the same set but instead of cutting into black, I’m cutting into the background and mounting it on black. Which one do you like best? 

Once again this background was created on white cardstock with various sprays in Distress Inks. Once the die cut was made it was mounted on a black card base. The sentiment is from a different stamp set.

Three Cards Today

 Brrrrr. Very Brrrrr. It was -18C (0F) this morning and with the wind chill it felt like -24C (-11F). Now that’s cold. I hope February is nicer to us!

Today I’m posting three cards because they were all made the same way, but different colours. Here are the cards.

 

Some times I just feel like creating backgrounds and then I set them aside and usually forget about them for awhile. These were all made with Distress Inks that were either sprayed on or smeared on a plastic sheet, sprayed with water and the paper dipped into it.

 I decided it was time to use them up. So I took this old Tim Holtz die that was designed to cut into a piece of cardstock, but not along the edges. There are three dies in the set. This one is my favourite. Once they were die cut and glued onto the background I just had to add the butterfly (old Memory Box die) and a peel-off.
