A Baby Card

 Well, with any luck the terrible heat wave we’ve been having will end tonight. I love summer and the heat but the humidity has to go. It has felt over 100F for a couple of weeks now so our A/C will be relieved of its duty as of tomorrow, I hope!

Today’s card is one of those ones that are very cute when finished but they do require a bit of work…like putting a puzzle together.

The stork and baby were all die cut; some from just white cardstock and then inked; some with coloured cardstock and then glued together in the right order. The Baby sentiment is from another die set. The circle and rectangle are from yet another set. The background paper is from my stash.

We had a bit of rain this morning and its threatening rain again right now (and I now I hear thunder) so hopefully that will bring some cooler air in.

Pink is for Baby Girls

It was a nice sunny day here in Ontario but a very cool wind was blowing so it meant jackets were necessary. We didn’t do much again today. This morning we watched two episodes of Amazing Race…..we tape them so we can watch them together in the morning…and this afternoon we took a drive out to Mitchell’s Bay to see if we could find the yellow-headed blackbirds or white pelican that was spotted there earlier this week. No luck….but it was a nice drive. There are some nice walking trails there but with the cool wind blowing we decided it would not be in my best interest to walk in it. As we stopped for a stop light back in town, Joe says, “Man, I could use a nap!” to which I replied, “I know. Bird watching is exhausting!” That cracked him up. This respirator bug didn’t kill my warped sense of humour.

Today’s card is a very cute baby card I recently made using a tiny stamp from HOTP. The stars and the sentiment came with the set – for $1.29.

 

The bear was coloured with Prismacolor pencils and blended with gamsol. It was die cut with a Spellbinder’s oval die and left in the die while pink ink was sponged around the image which leaves a nice white border. Then I pulled out the sewing machine and stitched around the oval. This was then mounted on some hot pink cardstock that was die cut with a Spellbinder’s scalloped oval die. The background is from a very old HOTP paper pack and I used two left over pieces taped together at the back and then a thin strip of hot pink was glued down the seam. The edges were inked with hot pink. I decided the bow needed to be a brighter pink to match the other hot pink so I re-coloured it with an alcohol pen. This was mounted on a pink card base.

A Bird, A Turtle and a Card

I almost forgot to post a card today because I keep thinking its Saturday. We went to Rondeau Park for a walk today – 8,222 steps – and we normally go on the weekend so this through me off. We didn’t see too much and didn’t get many photos but I did get this female Baltimore oriole.

Then we saved this huge snapping turtle.

He was right on the curve of the road and if a car was turning into the parking lot he would have been run over for sure. So, I called the Visitor’s Centre and they said they would send someone down. A few minutes later a car came out of the trail and as only park vehicles are allowed on that trail we knew help had come. It turns out the Visitor’s Centre hadn’t called them yet but this group of 4 naturalists were doing turtle studies at the park and she figured they would be sent back so she just moved him. She didn’t hesitate one bit and picked him up by the hind legs and moved him off the road….explaining all the time how to safely do so. I had to confess and told her that I had just posted the link that explained how to remove turtles off the road, including snapping turtles, on my Facebook page a few days before so I actually know the process, I just didn’t want to do it. The most important thing to remember is never, ever pick a turtle up by the tail as the tail is part of his spinal column and you could do irreparable damage. Also, turtles are endangered because so many get hit by cars. Some turtles have to live 20 years, yes 20 years, before they can mate for the first time. So, if you save on turtle, you could be saving hundreds!

Now for the card. I thought I’d post this baby congrats card that used up some of the paper stash.

I wanted a card for a baby shower that was gender neutral so yellow it is! I just pulled some yellow paper out of the stash and arranged them until I liked them. Then I added the die cut baby carriage, also yellow. The carriage seemed to be floating so I added the white with black polka dot ribbon for it to sit on. Then I added black gems for the spoke on the wheels. The sentiment and label were stamped and I cut around the label and glued it on.

A Leftover Baby Card

We had a lovely day today! The weather was perfect, more like an August summer day instead of September, which was nice so we opted to go to Port Stanley to see another play. It was hilarious! We loved it. Lunch was at the restaurant right across the street from the playhouse and after the play we stopped for ice cream. I think about half the audience from the play stopped at the same ice cream store. They make the ice cream on the premises and it is delicious!

This will be a short post because quite honestly, I’m bushed. I couldn’t get to sleep last night so I’m a bit tired today. There may not be a post tomorrow because it is the annual trip to the ophthalmologist and after he puts those drops in my eyes I am pretty much blinded by any amount of light at all for hours. Joe thinks it’s hilarious when he sees my eyes because they are just one big pupil.

But I do have a card for today. This card was made up from left over bits of paper and cardstock. Don’t throw out your leftovers people. Use them up instead.

The background paper and the green with stars is from two different paper sources. The blue “C” was from another. The yellow with congratulations and the tag from another set and the cute baby eyelets were from the dollar store I think. I think this is a very cute card and no one would guess it was not from a paper set.

Onsies

Another weekend past and I never left the house – darn old cold just didn’t want to go away. However, I’m almost over it now so things should get back to normal soon….as long as Joe doesn’t come down with it. We had to make an unscheduled trip to Port Huron today to pay respects to the family of one of our Michigan friends who died from cancer over the weekend. We met Dick and Sharon over 16 years ago at a hockey game and have been friends ever since. Dick will be sorely missed by his family that’s for sure. His family was everything to him, which is how it should be!

While we were there we stocked up on the frozen veggie food from there that we cannot buy here. We ran out of it months ago and never made the trip back to get more. We kept saying we would go “next week” but “next week” never came. I also made a quick trip into Hobby Lobby but didn’t buy much this time. I did pick up my favorite glue – Zip Dry – because it was $6.99 there and I had a 40% off coupon. It is almost $15.00 at Michaels which is ridiculous because the local small scrapbook store, the Paper Pickle, sells it for either $8.99 or $9.99. How can Michaels justify this??? Greed maybe??? The only other things I picked up were some bracelet memory wire and a couple of spray bottles – again less than half the price than Michaels charges!

However, I wasn’t too sick over to do a little crafting over the weekend – mostly scrapbooking – but I haven’t got them photographed yet so I can’t post them. I did make a few baby cards though. Here is one of them.

 

This was made with the rolling stamp from Stampin’ Up. I rolled it first on white cardstock with Versamark and black embossing powder and heat embossed them. Then I cut out the individual onesies and coloured them with Tombow markers. Then I rolled it again over pink cardstock using pink ink and glued the coloured onsie on top of one of them. Having the coloured onsie placed on top gives it some dimension instead of just colouring one flat. I strung some small little flower beads (Dollarama) onto pink embroidery floss and glued it across the card like a clothes line. Then I stamped the sentiment – which I should have done before I glued down the flowers but it just fit on! The edges of the pink cardstock were inked with hot pink and then glued to a pretty light green cardstock and then to a pink striped paper with those edges inked with pink as well. Then everything got glued to a hot pink card base. Lots of steps but it went together quickly actually.

A Baby Card & a Quilting Problem!

It felt really good to get back to the "lower studio" (aka the basement) and make a few cards last night. I haven't been down there for weeks it seems. First I had bronchitis and then we started bird watching so the photographing of birds was the only creative thing I've been doing. Well, except the Thomas the train quilt for my grandson I've been working on here and there. All I have to do now is put the binding on.....except.....I'm so mad about this - This is what happened.  My friend gave me some cut-outs of a train engine and four cars so I reduced them in size, copied them over and over until I had enough to go all around the outside border. And the problem is I used Johnny Sew iron-on paper to sew the outline of the trains to the outside border because it was suppose to be so good - and it does stay on while stitching - but it does not tear away easily! I have bits of white paper all over the borders. Joe washed the quilt for me today and I was sure that was going to remove it - NOT! Some of it came out but not all. Still lots left to somehow pick out. I'll never use that product again!

But the card got done. Here is a cute baby congrats card.

 

I made a blue card base and started adding layers. The first layer is a left over strip along the bottom. The second layer is the whitish piece that actually as a blue marble design in it and I just touched the edges with Tumbled Glass Distress Ink. The cute little onesie is from the roll stamp from Stampin' Up. I rolled it across some white cardstock and then trimmed each one down to use individually. It was quickly coloured with some Tombow markers and I added the little dots to the background with another stamp. This was then added to a pretty blue left-over scrap of paper and then to the blue piece. The BABY is a sticker from the dollar store....part of a pack. The sentiment was stamped in dark blue and the card was done.

Baby Card

What a gorgeous day - especially this morning! The sun was shining and the snow was melting and it was so nice to be out and about. No voice yet but I did get to Aqua Fit anyway - it's been 3-1/2 weeks with laryngitis. So nice to be back in the water again. What's really nice, besides the exercise, is the fact that no one can tell when you mess up or when you decided to just do your own thing instead of what the instructor is doing. I wear a water belt and go to the deep end and that makes it even easier to do your own thing. Unlike aerobics! I am not the most graceful or co-ordinated person; OK, I'm a klutz actually so I need all the help I can get. One time, many years ago, my oldest daughter and I decided to join an aerobics class. She was about 14 and about as graceful and co-ordinated as her mother. Well, we had a blast and so did a few people around us. The instructor, not so much. She had us all lined up in a row and doing some very fancy foot works and I'm not sure if I bumped into Maryanne or she bumped into me to start it but we sort of set off the domino affect, but with people. Bump, fall, bump, fall, bump, fall all down the line. Ooops. Sorry. Everyone laughed and thought it was funny. The instructor, not so much. Another night she had us laying on the floor and we had to bring one knee up and our head up at the same time. Maryanne got a little too aggressive and banged her head against her knee which threw me and several others into fits of laughter. The instructor, not so much. Another night just as the class started, Maryanne came down with a case of the hiccups - the noisy kind that you swear start in your toes. We all thought it was funny watching her face as she tried to stop them. The instructor, not so much. In fact, at the end of the session she strongly suggested that we do not take her next session. Yup, expelled from aerobics. Bet not too many people can say that! Some instructors just have no sense of humour!...and I'm sticking with Aqua Fit just be on the safe side.

Anyway, back to the post. Today I'm posting a baby card made with the "Onesie" rolling stamp from Stampin' Up.

I inked up the stamp and just rolled it across the white cardstock. Then I cut each one out and coloured them up. This one is, once again, done with Prismacolor pencils and gamsol. And, once again, I coloured it up before picking the paper. Oh boy. Will I ever learn? But, I went thru my stash and found the perfect paper. The sentiments are from two different sets.

Still freezing cold here in Ontario! Terrible cold snap and I hope snaps its way out of here real quick. Our car is over 5 years old but the Toyota turned over without missing a beat this morning.

Thrift Store Finds -

I had promised my friend to go over to her house today to help out with the kiddies she babysits while she went to the doctor's with her husband who is fighting lung cancer.......yes, their parents know I am the emergency back-up person......and I had to stop to buy a new kettle on the way home to replace the one that literally blew up yesterday!

Well, on the way home I decided to make a quick run thru Value Village and I'm so glad I did. The first thing I found was a brand new child's school day's scrapbook, complete with all the pages for recording events/pictures, etc. for $2.99. Cool. This one is going to the youngest grandson who is only 2-1/2 and the only one not in school yet.

Then I happened to notice some Cuttlebug Kids die sets - 2 sets, still in their packages. One was a set of 4 cars and trucks the other was a two-part elephant. It was what was sitting underneath of them that was the real find - a complete set of Sizzix Alphabet set still in the original box. Got them all for $7.99. I just used the Alphabet set on the scrapbook layout I was working on after lunch. This set has a double die. Besides the capital and small letters, it has the same ones only smaller so you can cut out one in each colour and offset them. Love it! So glad I stopped in.

Now on with the card. Here is a cute baby congratulations card.

The stamp is from Paper Wishes and the sentiment "roar", the bone and the footprints all come with it - and all for .99. This one was coloured with Luminarte paint, which leaves a lovely sparkly shiny finish. The paper is from Hot off the Press which is also Paper Wishes. Rectangle and deckle rectange die is from Spellbinders. The oval is a ProvoCraft label and the green strip was cut with the Tim Holtz edge cutter and then edged with green ink. A quick and easy but very cute card.

Precious Baby Card

Yesterday was quite the day. I was under attack from the two brain disorders Tuesday night and still with me yesterday morning. We had a few errands that needed doing so Joe suggested I come with him and then he would take me out for lunch (Chinese) and if I felt better we could go for a walk in the country. We did and although I was very tired when we got home - 9,736 steps in all for the day - I did feel better. One of the errands we had to do was to pick up a web cam for our desk top computer. Our tower is quite old, but our neighbour refurbished it last year. Trouble is the USB ports on the front of the computer did not like the web cam cable and refused to work so I had to crawl behind the tower to plug it into the back - where all the ports were being used. So, I had to unplug the camera cable, plug in the web cam cable and crawl back out. Bending over is also something the brain disorders do not like so that didn't help any. OK, now it works but won't reach the monitor. Bother! OK, I'm off to buy an extension cable today so I can wire it thru the back of the desk to the back of the tower. Hubby is funny! He is not a technical person at all - in fact, I'm his technical back-up! He says to me, "Don't we have any extra extension cords around"? Me - "Yes, we have lots but I need an extension cable, not a cord!" Him - "Oh"! Yeah, not a techie for sure!

I did get one card made and its another baby card.  I love this little stamp from Hot Off the Press I bought from Paper Wishes - best company ever to deal with!

Actually the paper comes from Hot Off the Press too, also from Paper Wishes. I stamped the bear and coloured her with water colour pencils...except the bow and bib which I wanted brighter so I used Tombow markers for that.  I sponged the pink ink around the oval while still in the die after colouring the bear. The little stars and the word precious also came with the stamp set - which was .99 by the way. As usual the ovals were cut with Spellbinder dies.

A Very Pink Baby Card

Another Monday! The summer is flying by faster then ever. One load of wash is on the line, the other is almost finished washing. I should get this post done before it stops. I love to hang the clothes on the clothesline. Hubby not so much. Besides the fact that a) it saves electricity b) they smell great c) it reminds me of my childhood. We didn't have a dryer at home, in fact my mom used a wringer washer, all her life - until they opened a laundromat! So I grew up helping her to hang the clothes on the line. Ahh memories!

Today's card is very pink. I needed more baby cards and although very pink, I like how this one turned out.

Told you it was pink! When I first bought my Cuttlebug it came with some two(2) inch sample embossing folders. They were very nice but for some odd reason they had a number in the corner. This baby carriage had  a '1' in the corner. Well, what if it wasn't the first baby? So, one day I decided to see if I could remove the numbers. First I filed off the embossed part. Trouble is when I ran it thru the Cuttlebug, I could still see the number, faintly, but it was there. Very annoying. So I filled in the debossed area with Spackle, which is what they use to fill holes in walls left by nails, etc. Easily bought at any home hardware store. Hubby had some so I borrowed his. I filled it in and let it dry - it shrinks - so I kept adding it until it was flush. In fact it was a little more then flush so I let it dry completed and sanded it smooth. Perfect. I did that to all the sample embossing folders.

So, I obviously ran this one thru the Cuttlebug but didn't put it on a card so when I came across it, I decided it was time to use it. I inked the embossed areas and the edges with hot pink ink and glued it to another pink square. Then I stitched around the edges of both. I had this pink polka dot paper so I used it as the designer paper. I wrapped the ribbon around it and secured it at the back before adding the embossed buggy. Once again, I tied the bow with my homemade bow maker. A quick and easy card, and I actually like it.

"Roar" card

Well after my marathon postings yesterday I feel like a slacker just posting one card today! I don't have a lot of stamps to make baby cards so I had to use "non-baby" stamps mixed with the few I have to make them. Here's what I came up with this time.

The baby dinosaur stamp came from Paper Wishes, Hot of the Press, and it was only .99 and it came with the word "roar", the bone and the footprints. I used water coloured pencils for this one. Used up more paper from my stash for the background and layering and then added the sentiments with the baby stamps I have. I pretty much always use double sided tape I buy at the dollar store to hold my ribbon down and this time I added a left over piece to the left side before sticking it down, and then I just tied a knot and trimmed the ends so it looked like a bow. Good way to use up those small pieces of ribbon. I hate to waste anything.

Bellarific Friday entry May 27

The challenge from Stampin' Bella this week was to use Kraft, Green and Navy. Mission accomplished! The navy background paper is from my stash. I picked up this Bella stamp of houses at the Paper Pickle when they had their sale. Wasn't sure what I was going to use it for - Christmas?..if I added snow?....House warming if someone moves???? But then a friend had a baby boy and and the phrase "There's a new boy in the neighbourhood" popped into my mind and I immediately thought of this stamp. It's stamped on watercolour paper with black Memento ink and then coloured with water colour pencils and blended. I haven't used the water colour pencils in months - OK, confession, I forgot I had them!! I think I prefer my Prismacolor pencils or Tombow markers for such tiny details but live and learn. The picket fence border is Martha Stewart and I computer generated the title in WORD and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the green lettering and the green c/s matched. The baby stamp is one I picked up at Michael's I think.
