Halloween 2024

 It was a windy and then wet Halloween here in Ontario. I ended up giving handfuls of chocolate bars to the few trick or treaters we had. I don't like chocolate but Joe does and he has quite a supply on hand now.

Tonight I'm posting a scrapbook layout I came across while scrolling through my photos. Its fitting to post tonight. I'm also posting the Halloween cards I made this year.

Scrapbook Layout

 The horrible heat and humidity finally left us earlier this week….and was replaced with rain and thunderstorms but much cooler temperatures. We had a vicious thunderstorm yesterday with almost 2” of rain falling in about an hour. Lots of streets and fields were flooded.  Canada Day falls on Monday this year and its our celebration very much like the USA’s 4^th of July. We always watch the mega fireworks that is a collaboration between Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario on TV….too loud and too many people to go in person...just before our joint celebrations

 A couple of weeks ago, my daughter, her hubby and one grandson came to Chatham to watch a ballgame with us. We have a new team in Chatham that belongs to the Inter-County Baseball League - very, very minor- but the team is a nice addition to the city.  They are called The Chatham-Kent Barnstormers. In the 30’s and 40’s and up to the 60’s, I think, successful sport teams and theatre acts were known barnstromers, especially baseball teams in the Negro League  which Chatham certainly had. This area is one of the many stops for the Underground Railway so we have a huge black population. In fact, the MLB All-Star, Fergie Jenkins, who is also in the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame, is from Chatham. So, anyway, they decided to name the team the Barnstormers to honour those who played in the Negro League.  Whew, end of history lesson.  

Here is the scrapbook layout I created with the few photos I took.

 

I did struggle getting this layout finished and I’m blaming it on working on it during the heat and humidity as I was suffering from an attack from the brain disorders I deal with…caused by the humidity. I changed the background 3 times before the third one stayed as plain blue. The back of the blue behind the other paper was gutted so I could use it to mount the photos on the right page and the strip behind the photos on the left side. I always do this as it saves paper and is less bulky. The title was die cut from black cardstock. The baseballs and popcorn bags were free clip art from the Internet. I didn’t have very many baseball themed  stickers or paper. The yellow tag and the arrow were die cuts as were the letters. I have a nice variety of alpha dies so they come in handy. The words on the tag, “summer here and now” are from a Tim Holtz sentiment die set. 

The red tag on the right page is from a pack of tags I picked up at a thrift store likely years ago. I forgot I had them, pulled them out, and found the perfect tag. The only sticker I had was the sun and the baseball sticker that is on top of the computer generated journaling which I printed on velum. The ticket on the right page is one of the admission ones from that day. I didn’t have many photos of us so I clicked a few of the open grandstand …..hot, hot, hot…and the batting cages and the mascot, Lefty.

I like to scrapbook the every day and little things in life as well as the big occasions.

Scrapbook Page Layout

 We are supposed to get some very warm, very unusually warm, weather for the next few days. It could be close to 70F if it happens as predicted. I’m pretty much a wait and see person when it comes to weather this year. Mother Nature is having “one of those days” for months now...just throwing out temperatures at will.

Well, the quilt I made is on its way to New Brunswick. After quilting like crazy for days to get it finished, I decided to switch to card making over the weekend. I’ve made about 18 cards to be donated to the hospice but I usually make 24 at a time so I think I’ll keep making a few more before dropping them off.

 So, today I’m posting the complimentary page to the one I posted last week. They are only related because Finn ran in two different races so the theme is the same, but the dates are different. Works for me. If you notice the white splotch it is were I erased the name of the city for posting purposes only.

 

 After he ran the kid’s race, and won a medal, he wanted to climb on the podium where the winners of the adult marathon will stand. He has dreams I think! After the race he was happy to be home with his dogs. This boy loves his dogs.

Mud Run

 We are back to a mild day here in Ontario. Mother Nature is just adjusting our temperature like throwing out Power Ball numbers. Oh well, we just enjoy these nice days as they come.

Its been awhile since I’ve posted a scrapbook page. This is one of my favourite layouts. Hope you like it.

Our youngest grandson loves the outdoors including doing children’s obstacle courses and marathons geared for young children. On this particular day, the race was scheduled for a day after a major rain storm. There was no cancellation….. but there’s nothing a boy likes more than getting dirty. Luckily my daughter knows how to take just the right photos to tell the story - hence the muddy knees photo.

The photos were computer generated on a template and then printed out. I used the royal blue cardstock as the background to pick up the blue in his jacket. The beige cardstock was smooched with brown and blue ink and the edges were frayed for even more grunge look. Then splatters were stamped in brown using Stampin’ Up grunge stamps. Some brown ink was watered down and that was splattered across the page as well. Then the photo layout was mounted on brown and glued down. The title was some die cut a few times and glued together for some dimension and painted brown. The journaling was computer generated; mounted on the same brown cardstock and glued down. The tag on the bottom was stamped on green cardstock; mounted on brown as was his name and the year tags. This picked up the green grass colour. I did make a companion page which I'll post next time.

A Scrapbook Layout

 

        It’s another Friday! The summer is almost over but I need more summer! The weather network says September is going to be above seasonal temperatures so I’m hoping they are right.

        Today I’m posting a scrapbook layout I did using photos for my 69^th birthday….so this was from 2016. 

         I used a sketch from the Sketchy Group on Facebook….but with my own twist on it. I’m just not a sketch following person! This was a pretty quick layout to put together. The background is one piece of 12x12 paper.  The edge of each photo was outlined with a blue pen….this makes a huge difference. Once they were glued down I started added the stripes of dark blue paper that just happened to match my shirt. Then I found that velum quote at the bottom which was perfect for this layout…and for me because I do not care if people know how old I am. Age is just a number; it does not define a person. The journaling was computer generated.

More Trains

I almost forgot to publish a posting today. It was a busy day and busy night. After supper I went for a walk and just nicely got home when my friend showed up on her bike. We had a porch visit until almost 9:00! It was a lovely day and night here but hot and humid weather is on its way again.

        Here is another scrapbook layout featuring my train-loving grandson. This is a different day and different train visit from the one I posted on Monday but I decided to place them side by side in the album so they almost look like a double layout.

                        

         Finn’s first love of trains was Thomas the Train as it is for most little guys. When the real version came close to where they live, they had to take him to see Thomas up close. They even bought tickets and he got to ride in Thomas. His smile says it all. This layout was again a digital layout and mounted on red. More downloaded embellishments and some from the stash.

Lovebirds Scrapbook page

        Our hot and humid weather continues right along with the promise of rain which never happens….maybe tomorrow…maybe!

        A month or so ago I posted a scrapbook layout featuring my grandson Joven. I sent a copy of it to him and a few days later I received a few photos of him and his girlfriend and he said “maybe you would like these for a scrapbook page”….well, I can take a hint. Here’s the page I made for them.

                                    

         I used a sketch from Creative Scrapbooker Magazine Sketchy Group on Facebook. It is free to join and you get some great inspiration from the sketches and from what others post. I highly recommend it.

      He only had four photos….did not inherit the “take lots of photos gene”…and I really wanted to fill in the gab across the angle so I simply die cut a tag; inked it; stamped their names and a sentiment and heart and added it in. All the edges of the photos are outlined with a black pen which makes them stand out but no extra bulk. The heart border are die cuts. I found the Lovebirds title in the stash. It’s on velum so it was adhered with button brads and then one was used on the tag to create the invisible triangle. He liked it and showed to his girl friend and told me she really liked it too. He’s a considerate young man.

A Scrapbook Layout

After two days of winter weather, we had a beautiful spring day here. It was so nice we were able to work out in the garden this afternoon. There is even one tulip blooming in the garden now….the rest have buds but this one is in full bloom.

Today I’m posting a scrapbook layout I did about a day trip we took to a beautiful garden. I had just picked up my new camera and we were trying it out. Here are the two pages side by side.

I had two 12” x 12” papers with that leaf border and decided it would be perfect for this layout. Then I found the flower borders and the light green paper that matched the leaves around the page and added them to the middle. Each photo had a black line drawn along the edge so it looks like it was matted but no extra bulk by adding more cardstock. To do this I place the straight edge of an old greeting card across the photo and use a photo-safe pen to draw a line. Always place the greeting card across the photo because once in a while the pen will jump off and go across the card….better than the photo….and yes, I learned this the hard way.

        Then it was a simple matter of adding the photos. The leaf vines and flowers were die cut and the flowers were shaped and white ink was sponged across them to give them a bit of a hi-lite.  The leaf vines were glued down and then yellow brads were used for the flower centres and they are attached through the paper layers. When the pages were finished and set side-by-side I decided they needed something red in the top left of the first page. This keeps the eye moving around the page. I didn’t want more flowers so I die cut a label and added a tag that says “together”….that works for me.

A Scrapbook Layout

        Winters back again. What a wild ride we’ve had this winter with the weather. It’s just above freezing now and we are expecting a small amount of wet snow and/or rain. This morning we had a snow shower with the biggest snowflakes ever! It was quite pretty watching it come down….it melted as soon as it landed though. This afternoon we had more snow….but not the big soft ones – but hard wet ones with strong winds….brrrr.  It’s cold today and tomorrow……but Sunday and Monday it is expected to be 11C (51F) then back down to near freezing again. Crazy! Crazy! Crazy weather.

        Today I’m posting another scrapbook layout. This one is about my grandson and one of the clubs he belongs to. Most of the clubs he joins include two things – something physical to do and they raise money for cancer. His father usually is along too as either coach or just watching.

        This layout was based on a sketch from Creative Scrapbook Sketchy group on Facebook that I joined.

Here is my take on it. 

I pretty much followed the sketch but the one photo on the top left could not be cut down to fit one square so it took up two of them. The papers are from the stash. Once I glued down the photos; designer paper instead of a photo; and the computer generated journal squares it was a simple matter of adding the die cut embellishments. This is from 2016 just before he donated his long hair to Locks of Love and he now has a brush cut!

Love is in the Air

          More snow; more melting; more messy sidewalks. It started snowing Wednesday night and snowed off and on all night and all day Thursday. Fortunately it was mild until late Thursday when the temperatures took a dive so it mostly melted. It was down to -16(3F) overnight but with the wind chill it felt like -25C (-13F). Luckily we didn’t have to go out during the night. Still bitter cold all day today.

        Besides card making and quilting and other crafts I really enjoy scrapbooking. Here is a layout using just one photo – which is a rarity for me. I usually create a two page layout with multiple photos but sometimes I have just one. I had no idea of how to scrap it until I saw a sketch posted on Facebook’s Creative Scrapbooker Sketchy Group I joined. This was the February sketch and although I had to change it a bit, it still worked.

        So the first thing I did was to draw the heart on a piece of scratch paper; flipped the designer paper over and traced it to the back and cut it out. Big oops – the sketch had the heart on the other side. Oh well. Temporary glue was put on the back of the heart and stuck to the dark brown cardstock. Then I carefully trimmed away the brown leaving a very small border…then they were permanently glued together. The sketch uses three photos and I only had the one of my granddaughter and significant other. So I placed a piece of designer paper behind them. Everything is from my stash so I have no idea where any of the paper or embellishments came from. The large title was die cut twice – once in the designer paper – which is the reverse side of the paper behind the photo – and once out of brown cardstock. The designer paper was glued on top of the brown die cut but off centred a bit so the brown showed as a shadow. Once the photo was glued in place, the embellishments were added. The hearts were die cut from bits left over from the larger heart and the dark brown cardstock. The strip at the bottom of the photo is again the back of the designer cardstock behind the photo. I just kept die cutting and adding hearts falling until I liked it. Larger ones were grouped near the bottom of the photo. Then I added the rest of the embellishments and tags. My granddaughter loved this layout.

A Scrapbbok Layout

        Sorry there was no posting on Wednesday but it was unavoidable. Joe had his angiogram on that day so it was a 5:00 am start for us; hours at the hospital; an hour’s drive home and too tired by then to even think about posting anything. The good news is his heart is very healthy and the doctor said he has seen more plaque on an artery in men 10 years younger than he is….guess all that healthy eating and exercising we do paid off after all. However, more investigation required to find out why he gets so short of breath.

        Today is scrapbook posting day. It’s a two page layout, which is my normal.

 

    All the paper is from the stash and all from various companies. I do not store my paper by manufacturer, mostly by holiday, theme, or colour. The background on both pages is two pieces of co-ordinating 12”x12” paper cut in half sideways and then I glued opposite sides together. For this one I wanted to break up background so I found strips of left over paper in various widths and lengths and glued them down. There were two 4 x 6 photos that I trimmed down a bit to cut out the distractions of other people; one small one I die cut into a circle and one I fussy cut. A black pen was pulled down the sides of the rectangle photos to give them a black border without adding any more paper….I do this a lot….cover the photo with something like an old greeting card with a straight edge. Place the card along the edge of the photo; hold it down tight and draw your line. If the pen slips it will go on the old greeting card and not across your photo….yup, learned this the hard way. Then I drew a black line across the top of the layout on an angle an added the round typewriter letters to spell ‘zip line’ and glued his picture onto the line. The ‘Cowabunga” sign came in a package of odds and ends I picked up at the thrift store as did the sun with sunglasses. Three buttons were added under the cowabunga sign and then the date.

 

The co-ordinating page was made up of rectangle photos in various sizes but the bottom photos were layered on some blue paper to pick up the blue in his shirt and hat.  The journaling was computer generated. Thin strips of green paper were added above and below the title. The title was die cut out of black cardstock and glued in place.

At the Pier Layout

            Besides quilting, photography, painting and making cards, I also love to do mixed media pieces and scrapbook layouts. So, today I’m posting a scrapbook layout from 2016 when our youngest grandson graduated from SK into Grade 1….Yup, they now have graduation ceremonies for this….which Joe found hilarious….but we definitely drove the three hours to attend it. After the graduation we went to the bay for supper and even more fun.

 

We walked along the pier and then back to the sidewalk and then back down to the docks. It was a lovely June night so we didn’t mind one bit. Joe, Finn and Janette decided to rest on these green chairs that are for the public to use but the sun was very bright and shining right on them so they didn’t stay there long. All the paper is from the stash. The journaling is computer generated….I don’t care for my handwriting so I seldom use it.

 

         The walk along the pier was beautiful. Joe and Finn both love boats so they were thrilled to see some tied up along the docks. They loved this old one and wanted their picture taken showing the entire boat…hence the nice circle around them in the bottom left photo. I tried to tell them they would be small if I got the entire boat in but they didn’t believe me…but when I showed it to them, they then posed for a close-up shot! All the paper and embellishments are from the stash. I seldom follow a sketch. I just wing it.

        Postings may or may not be every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for awhile. We just found out yesterday that hubby has a blockage in his heart and an irregular heart beat (Afib is the short form for it) and will have to have surgery. So my life could get very busy again. I’ll try my best to keep the posts up though. Art is my therapy and stress reliever!

Snow again????

            Snow again! Seriously Mother Nature. Are you menopausal? This is ridiculous. Saturday we had rain most of the day and then in the late afternoon, it switched to snow….large wet flakes. We figured they would melt as they hit the ground. Wrong! This is the tree on our front lawn and you can see the snow across the street. I took this Sunday morning.

     We ended up with about 2” of snow which didn’t melt off the lawns, trees and fences until today. Luckily it melted off the roads and sidewalks quite quickly. To make the weekend even worse our hydro (electricity for the USA readers) went out about 8:50 pm and was off for 2 ½ hours. What a weekend!

        So, because snow is on my mind, I thought I’d switch from a card to a scrapbook layout of my grandsons playing in the snow.

Here are the pages side by side. These are not the best for viewing because I still haven’t figured out how to take clear photos of the scrapbook pages. More research required! But, it does give you an idea of how they look.

Here are the individual pages which did photograph a bit better.

I like to run an acid free black pen down the edges of the photos to make them look like they are mounted on black but with less bulk…and less paper to buy. To do this, lay a piece of scrap cardstock…I use old greeting cards with the long edge cut clean… on the photo leaving a very thin border – like 1/8”. Run the pen down the photo…sometimes twice if you don’t get good coverage. I have had a few occasions when the pen would slip and go right across the old greeting card….instead of the photo…which is why I make sure the greeting card cover the photo.

      I used two pieces of paper, one with snowflakes and one with gloves, etc. for layers on top of the background paper. Then I added the photos. I glued a thin border under the photos to ground them and to link the two pages together. The page title “Frosty Fun” were stickers that I peeled off and stuck onto die cut squares and then glued them on, on an angle. I laugh at Jack’s hat every time I look at this layout. Where in the world he found a winter hat with a gorilla face is beyond me.

        I had fewer photos on the right page so I was able to add a long border with a winter saying. Their dog got into the act as well.

While I was upstairs, he just had to sneak up to the front door, open it and ring the door bell, and then sneak out of sight in the living room. Of course, I’m usually the one who answers the door so I hurry down the stairs, sneak a peek out the window and see no one, so I open the door and look out and then I hear laughing behind me. Good lord. He thought this was hilarious.

Page Two

This was a busy Friday – first we had an unexpected but delightful visit from friends but had to cut it short because I had signed up as a volunteer to cover the front table for the quilt show….beautiful quilts! That ended at 1:00 so home for a quick lunch and then ran some errands. One of them was to pick up my wedding ring that had worn through. I was surprised they could fill it with gold and mend it – looks like new. I had another wedding ring that was filigree designed and it was beautiful but it cracked in several places and could not be repaired. It’s been sitting around for ages and I finally wondered if it could be melted down to a nugget and I could wear it as a necklace – yes! It can be and it only cost $55.00 to do so. I’m a happy camper!

        Today I’m posting the second half of a two page layout I did of my grandson when he came for a weekend visit.

        Once again the photos were downloaded to a scrapbook template using Photoshop Elements. Then I simply added the computer generated journaling; brads; buttons and embellishments.

At the Park Layout

Before I post my scrapbook layout I’ll give you a quick update on the appliance saga……nothing runs smoothly for us! We found out late yesterday afternoon that the stove was in and would be delivered Friday but the refrigerator was back ordered – groan. I told the store that we had Habitat for Humanity arranged to pick up both our appliances in the morning so we would call them to say only one was ready. Instead the lady at the store said, “No, don’t make them make two trips. We will supply you with a loaner fridge but it will be white, not stainless steel”. So nice of them! This is why we deal with family owned…. Mom and Pop shops as some people call them….instead of the big box stores!....and their prices were the same as the big box stores too.

I thought I would end the week with a scrapbook layout. It’s been awhile since I’ve posted any.

 We had our youngest grandson for the weekend and I took him to the park. The photos were transferred to a digital template but I added the photo that is on an angle. This is easy to do in Photoshop. Once it was printed out I just outlined it in a black photo safe pen. The word “fun” was added to that bottom rectangle in Photoshop instead of a photo….and the colour is just digital paper.  

Once it was printed out it was glued to far left of the background paper…. which is a combination of left over strips that picked up all the colours in the photos. This is page one of a two page layout and the background paper is the same in the second layout which I hope to post next week…if I remember! To fill up the space on the far right I took some small tags I had printed from the Internet….sort of like Project Life products… and inked the edges on some and mounted some on other paper. Then I stitched wavy stitch lines down the page…tricky to do with a sewing machine sometimes when you don’t plan ahead….which I don’t…. but it worked. Then I poked holes in the top of each tag and ran a thread through them and taped it to the back. Then I glued on the tags so it looks like they attached to the thread. I added the embellishments, brads and buttons.

A Scrapbook Layout

The hot and humid weather is creeping back and we had to turn the A/C back on. It’s going to feel like it’s over 100F again for the next few days….and of course, with the humidity comes thunderstorm warnings….we are hoping for some rain!   

We have two folding lawn chairs that have the foot rest and they are our favourites to take to the river when we just want to sit and read. The trouble is the bags ripped out. So, I took one ripped one into my favourite fabric shop, R.B. Fabrics, and picked out some rain-proof canvass to make new ones. The own, Rick, helped me figure out how much material I needed and gave me some tips on how to set up my machine for this heavy fabric. One is completed, one is about 90% done. It is awkward fabric to work with and when these are done, I’m going back to sewing with cotton! I wanted to get them done because when it’s this hot outside, we don’t ride the bikes, we sit at the river.

I thought I’d end the week with a scrapbook layout. We took two of our grandsons to Old Fort Malden a few years ago and here is the layout I did. 

I wanted to use my digital scrapbook templates so I downloaded the photos of some of the sights and demos we saw. There was one section that didn’t have a photo so I downloaded that polka dot digital paper, matched the colour to Jack’s shirt and added it in. The background paper came the way it is but I added that strip across the bottom. I liked the grunge look it gave. I added the journal strip but added the top and bottom brown pieces which were die cut with the Tim Holtz die and just used the middle bits.  

I used a different digital template for these photos. The title down the middle was also done on the computer. On this one I added some strips of sayings and more journaling.

Water Park Fun

Still hot and humid here in Ontario but it feels like a thunderstorm is brewing. That should cool things off a bit.

I thought I’d post a scrapbook layout for a change.

We had our grandson for the weekend and he loves water parks and he told us this one the best one he has ever gone to – EVER!...in his sweet 6 year old voice! Because his bathing suit and matching T-shirt (which he insists on wearing) were red and blue I went with that colour combination in the layout. I happened to have a 12x12 piece of cardstock that had water droplets on it so that was an easy choice for the background. To mimic waves I just added the die cut scallops along the bottom. The photos were downloaded into a 8x8 inch digital file; then printed and mounted on red cardstock……and yes, I cut out the middle of the red! That way, I used some of it for the word ‘memories’ which was die cut with the Cuttlebug alphabet dies; the tag (QuicKutz) and the hand cut banner at the top left…..these three form the invisible triangle so your eye stays on the page. Amazing how that actually works.

The blue metal embellishment on the top left started out blue but I sanded off the embossed areas right down to the silver - it was fastened with a red brad. The large alphabet title started out a different colour and I just sponged on alcohol inks until I liked the colours. I remember once several years ago I bought three packages of bright pink alphabet letters at our local scrapbook store and when Kim asked me what in the world I was going to do with so many pink alphabets I told her I don’t care what colour they are now, I just sponge alcohol ink on them to change the colour to what I want. She was flabbergasted! She had never thought of doing that.
