Turning Paper Scraps into Cards

Unfortunately the bad weather did not miss us completely. Nasty cold wind and more snow and then rain which melts the snow but it makes everything slippery and icy in spots….. and we get to experience this again tomorrow.….with even more snow….. Yuck.

Today’s card was made with two pieces of left over paper I found in one of my many stashes and decided NOT to put it back in the stash but to use it! I think these were the last two pieces I had of a Thomas Kincaide paper pack I bought - YEARS ago. I’m so bad at hanging on to bits of paper it’s ridiculous.

I did ponder on how to use these two bits of paper for quite awhile. I set them both on various backgrounds and different sentiments and embellishments but nothing was right…. but as I was moving them around they eventually ended up sitting on top of each other. AAHHH Light bulb moment people! I took a piece of grey cardstock and made a standard A2 card card base and then used the other half of the cardstock to cut two pieces to mount the designer paper on - each one is 1/4” larger so a small 1/8” border shows. I glued them down and die cut a sentiment in black and the outline in white and glued it to a piece of velum - yes, also left over - and decided I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

That’s all for a cold and typical January day on January 11, 2024.

Cheers

Violet

Stash Card

Sad, tragic news this morning regarding the shootings in Las Vegas…why, why, why keeps going through my mind. All those innocent people killed while listening to music. Senseless. The world is getting scarier and scarier and I hope and pray that it turns the corner towards peace soon.

I thought of skipping a posting today but we cannot live in fear and life has to go on so I’m going to post a card today.

Every once in awhile I dig into my scrap bag…okay confession…bags of left over bits of paper and cardstock and arrange them into a background for a card. I happen like blue and yellow together so that’s what I used here. I line them up how I like them; glue them to a piece of left over white paper that measured the size I wanted – usually 3 ¾ x 5 ¼; letting the extra bits hang off the ends; trim it to size and then I run it through an embossing folder for extra texture. The large blue on bottom left was a piece of cardstock that took the embossing very well so I ran a sanding block over it to reveal the white interior for even more texture. The piece of white cardstock has two embossed lines across it courtesy of my Scor-Pal and then the edges were inked with blue and the sentiment and fancy small scrolls stamped with the same blue. Once it was glued over the background, the entire piece is glued to a dark blue card base. These are very popular cards, especially for men who do not like any ribbons; flowers or glitz…boring men!

Here is an embossing tip for you. If you are embossing thin paper that seems to tear try laying it between two pieces of paper or thin cardstock before embossing. I just use bit of left over paper that would be thrown in the recycle bin anyway.

That’s all for a sad Monday, October 2, 2017.

Cheers

Another Scrappy Card

This is a rare Sunday post but I missed both Thursday and Friday last week so I thought I’d get one in today as I sip my coffee. Our six year old grandson graduated from Senior Kindergarten to Grade one last Thursday and they had a huge graduation ceremony….go ahead and roll your eyes, everyone does!...but then they agree that if it’s important to the child that their parents and grandparents be there, then it’s nice that they can make it happen. Finn really wanted us there so we drove the almost 3 hours to watch him. So cute! Here are a couple photos of the day.

Finn and his best friend, Sabry...cookie lovers.

Afterwards we had an outing and supper down by the water. It really was a great visit.

A trolley ride along the bay.

We stayed overnight and on Friday we had a visit and lunch with my sister and then a short visit with my brother. My other sister is still in the hospital so I’ve been watering her plants and visiting her too so it has been a crazy week for sure. Hopefully she will be released within a day or two.

Today’s card was made after one of those, ‘what the heck am I going to do with this paper’ question.

I pulled out a package of left over paper….yes, even my scraps are organized in colour packs….it’s a Virgo thing…..and I am determined to use them up. So, this piece was in the pack and I kept looking at it and wondering how to use it in a card without covering up that lovely background image. There was a solid piece of paper in the pack as well that was the same colour as the background so the first thing I did was cut it to 5 ¼”x 5 ¼” to cover a 5 ½” square card leaving that white narrow white border – to pick up on the white flowers in the printed design……all the edges of all the paper were inked with a darker ink colour. There was a piece of the plain paper left over so I cut a strip and placed it across the designer paper near the bottom and added gold peel-off strips along the edges. Next the gold peel-off sympathy sentiment and a small heart were added. So far so good I thought but it needed something else….in gold. Back to the peel-off pouch to the “image” section and found the perfect gold butterfly. The butterfly trail are the left over bits from other peel-offs….never throw them away! I use every bit of the peel-offs. My peel-off pouch is from the dollar store and it has various sections so all the peel-offs are in their own section - lines; corners; sentiments; images; Christmas, etc – which makes it much easier to find things quickly.

Overall I think the card turned out pretty good and I’m pleased with it. That’s all for a very hot and humid Sunday. No bike ride or BBQ today….big thunderstorms are predicted this afternoon and tonight which is no surprise seeing as it has been hot and humid for a few days now. We desperately need a good all day rain but even a thunderstorm rain will help.

Cheers

Violet
