Purple Flowers

 

Well, we missed the last snow storm that hit areas about 45 minutes drive from here but it looks like we are going to have snow for the next 4 or 5 days so doubtful it will miss us entirely. Neither one of us like snow, cold and winter so we hibernate all we can.

Today I’m posting another card made with my new die set. I forgot to mention in the last post that all the flowers were laid on a soft pad and a large stylus was run over the wrong side and then flipped to the front with pressure just in the middle of the flower to give them dimension.

Here’s a purple flowered card. You can see the dimension in this card better than the last card.

I found this background paper in the stash and decided to use it in a card. It was a little smaller than 4 x 5.25 so gold peel-off strips were added around the edges with small ovals in the corners. The flowers were made the same way as the last card I posted; but used different bits and pieces. Lots of dies in this set. The sentiment was stamped on a fancy tag. It was then mounted on a dark purple card base.

Blue Flowers Card

 

Well, January is here with very typical January weather – cold with a cold wind along with snow showers off and on. Yuck. This image popped up on Facebook today and its exactly how I feel.

I decided to buy myself a new die set. I kept seeing cards made with it on a couple of sites on Facebook and decided I had to have it. It is a Spellbinder’s die set called Bold Bloom and I had Stamp Art in London, ON order it in for me. I love it! No buyer’s remorse here! Here’s one of the many cards I have created already.

This time I die cut the flowers in white and sponged ink in the middle of the large ones letting it fade out near the edges. The buds were die cut from white as well but I sponged blue ink all over the middle part only and once assembled, I really liked it. The small blooms were die cut in white and completely inked with blue but darker in the centre.  The flower centres were also die cut in white and glued on and some of the blue ink behind them leaked through which I was more than happy with. The flowers needed something to sit on so I die cut that fancy label from another old die set and then stamped the sentiment. The stems and leaves were die cut from green cardstock and glue on afterwards.

A Glitter Scrappy Card

 

It officially winter here in Ontario. We now have snow that didn’t melt on contact with the ground like it did earlier in November. Areas just north of us are buried in snow but we just got enough to barely cover the grass. However, according to the weather network, we will get a lot of snow for the next 30 hours – yuck!

Today I’m posting a card using a die that I seldom use….but really, really wanted the set when I bought it….and used some left over paper bits as well. This is definitely a scrappy card.

I bought this diamond die set a couple of years ago and just have not used it to its full potential. There were several pieces of glitter cardstock left over from a couple of paper packs and I decided to use those up as well. So, several different pieces of paper were die cut; arranged on a piece of scrap paper; and then glued to a pink card base. The sentiment and squiggle under the sentiment are gold peel-offs.

Mixed Media Magic Card

 We are under another heat wave….along with thunderstorms. What a weird summer! The heat wave will continue all week with temperatures hot and humid and nearly 100F. Thank goodness I have indoor hobbies to keep me busy.

 It was one of my daughter’s birthday this week and this is the card I made for her.

 

 The background started out as a piece of 12x12 ugly striped cardstock that I knew I would never use. So, it was time for some mixed media magic to transform it into something I would use. I like to make the family cards really special and I thought Janette would like this one….and she did.

Sorry, I don’t keep track or photo each step when I do mixed media. This was several layers of paint, spray, ink, gesso, stamps and stencils. I just keep layering until I like it and then I stop. Once I cut it down to fit on a A2 card which is the light purple, I added the die cut butterfly (Memory Box die) and sentiment (no idea of manufacturer, sorry)…which is the same paper as the card base. I no longer worry about cutting up the cardstock. When I need a matching piece, I cut! The dots for the butterfly trail was stamped in black. I thnk its an old Technique Tuesday stamp. The butterfly was popped up with dimensional tape.

Birds and a Card

 We had a very pleasant weekend but today is another scorcher….hot and humid. So we packed up a lunch and headed to Mitchell’s Bay for the afternoon. The wind comes off the lake and it is so much cooler there. I always take my camera with me “just in case” and I’m so glad I did. We noticed a very small bird under a bench and wondered what it was. It turned out to be a baby Cedar Waxwing. I don’t think it fledged but fell out of the nest. Here are a couple photos of it.

 

 Here's a video of it trying to fly and the mother happened to show up to feed it. Hope it opens. 

I was very busy in my ‘lower studio’ last week but not crafting! I was purging! I have a whole box of crafting supplies that I decided I was not going to use and they are going to sold or donated.

I do have a couple of cards ready to post though. Here’s one.

                               

 This is an old Art Impression stamp (I think) so not sure if its available anymore. I had a stack of old greeting cards someone gave me and this one with the funny flowers was one of them. I decided to repurpose it. Not all the flowers had stems so I added stems and gems in the centre of each one. The lady was stamped, coloured and then I hand cut her out and attached her with dimensional dots. The two sentiments were stamped - the top one from my stash and the one by her came with the stamp set.

Heat Wave and a Card

 We are having a heat wave and it’s a wicked one. Close to 100F every day this week and its so humid you can hardly breathe outside…. and it will continue well into the weekend. This, of course, triggers thunderstorms too and possible tornadoes. So far, only thunderstorms.

 I don’t get quite as much card making, quilting or scrapbooking done in the summer but I still manage to get a few hours each week in. Here is one card I made.

I was just in another playing around with some stamps I bought and never used and this card was the result. I wasn’t sure if I really liked it all that much but my friend loved it so it went with her. The background was all sponged with various Distress Inks. I stamped the lady first and the flowers in an arc to her right. Then I decided to sponge some ink to create the background sky. The area around her hand was inked in light yellow and also down the arc of flowers but it is very light. The sky and ground are various Distress ink…and possibly some Stampin’ Up ink as well. Then the flowers were stamped on the top left corner and a few on the top right. Some of the flowers, which are really small circles, were coloured with markers in a variety of blues and purples. Then I decided she needed something in her outreached hand so I die cut and coloured those tiny butterflies and glued them on. The sentiment was stamped. It could use some improvement but for an experiment its not too bad.

That’s all for a very hot and humid Tuesday June 18, 2024.  Oh, and today is our 36^th wedding anniversary but we decided it was way too hot to get dressed up to go out for supper. We’ll celebrate on another night. No big deal for either of us. We are each other’s best friend and we spend about 90% of our time together, which we love! So the actually anniversary date is secondary to how we love each other.

Gate Fold Card

 The April Showers have persisted all of May! It has been a very wet spring so far. The other night we were under a tornado threat but it missed us and stayed over the lake. But rain! Wow! It has rained almost every day or at least every other day in May. We enjoyed seeing our peonies bloom for about two days and then the ‘Peony Rain’, as my mother used to call it, came and flattened them. Happens every year. Joe’s ready to pull them all out but I’m just not ready for that yet.

Oh well, sunnier days are coming I’m sure.

 Today’s card is another gate fold card. It’s so much fun to make these.

 

I found this pretty flowered paper in a 6” paper pack and luckily had the matching purple cardstock in my stash. I love having stashes! The flowers on the front are from a dollar store and the sentiment is a gold peel-off. The little flower on the lower left keeps the card closed. It needed a little more so I added the sequins and gems.

Turning 100 Card

 Its been awhile since my last post! Life is busy this time of the year. We are having a holiday long weekend right now in Canada called May 2Four or May Two4 or Victoria Day which it used to be called. It was originally called Victoria Day after a Queen in England but somehow people started calling it May 2-4 and it stuck. We had a lovely day bird watching yesterday at Rondeau but because the weather has been so much warmer than usual, the leaves are out full - about 2-1/2 weeks ahead of time. It made it very tough to find the birds but we just enjoy being out in nature so it was nice. Today was planting the annual flowers day - big, big job but the garden is going to look very colourful!

We also had rain about every other day the last two weeks so I did get some cards made. Here is one of them.

  A friend asked if I could make a card suitable for an aunt turning 100! Here’s what I came up with.

                            

The card base is a lovely soft pinkish beige with embossed leaves. The panel started out as white cardstock and I stamped the music notes in VersaMark ink and heat embossed in gold.  Then the panel was  dipped into some Distress Inks - not sure what colours I used now….some blues and browns. I just smear them on my glass mat, spray water, smear and start dipping. Dry between each dip! Then it was mounted on a gold panel but offset a bit. The middle of the gold panel was gutted and I die cut that tag from it. No one knows if you remove the middle of a panel that is glued down to something else! Well, I guess they know now if they are reading this! The sentiment is a peel-off. Once I liked how it looked on the card base and was glued down, the flowers were added. These came from the Dollar Tree but the leaves I die cut myself. My friend was thrilled with it so all is good. Whew!

Gate Fold Cards

 One day its spring, the next day its winter again. My two brain disorders do not like the abrupt changes in weather so I’ve had a few days when the creativity and concentration just isn’t there. Instead I’ve been trying to purge the craft supplies and reorganize the stamps and died - a taunting task for sure when I don’t have the proper storage units… and I really don’t want to invest in shelves so its make do here.

I did make some cards a couple of weeks ago and I must say, I’m loving these gate fold cards. Instead of a belly band which I find to be a bit of a nuisance, I’ve started doing them a little different.

Here’s one with a belly band.

 

It’s okay but once you take off the belly band you lose the circle, flowers and sentiment.

 Here’s two I made without the belly band.

 

You make them the same way - gate fold card. The sides meet in the middle and the card opens up.  This is one I made without anything holding it closed so it does open up a bit before you want it to but its still okay.

 

Now this one I die cut an small circle twice and glued them together to make them stronger and its glued on just enough off the main focal image to hold it closed. There is a fine line between close enough to keep it closed but still easy to latch and difficult to latch - this one falls on the latter but it works. Who ever receives probably won’t be opening and closing it all that much.

Two Flower Cards

 Well this was a very different Christmas. We are used to having a green Christmas but this year it was a record breaking high! Temperatures well into the 40F!…but rain and fog came with it with no end in sight. Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday whichever one they choose to celebrate.

While watching my favourite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, on television, I like to colour stamped images while I’m sitting there. Here are two cards with the same image, but coloured in different colours. I think I used some inexpensive, like dollar store, alcohol markers on these. I have about 4 Copic markers that I bought about 10 years ago while visiting Michigan and the rest are dollar store ones. I just cannot justify buying Copics.

                                   

After colouring the flowers, I just found some card bases that seem to go well with them. The sentiment is stamped. Before mounting them I watered down some ink and splattered it across the card. Then fancy shimmer thread was wrapped around them. These would qualify for quick and easy cards but I quite like them.

Two Cards today

 It’s definitely typical fall weather here in Ontario. Several cities and areas not far from us had snow last weekend, but we just had rain. Thank goodness. I’m so not ready for snow.

Next week I have twin siblings having their 85 birthdays.  I made them each a card, of

course. Here they are.

 Pearl loves flowers and gardening is her passion so I had to make her a flower card. This is a Stampin' Up stamp. I love mixing different hues of the same colour. So, I pulled out the turquoise (probably my favourite colour) to make the card base and then the strip down the left side. The designer paper is from the stash. I die cut a stitched frame and I then stamped the flowers in turquoise. But, then I decided I wanted something behind them so I pulled out a stencil and added some light pink ink through the stencil. I didn’t try to do it even, just here and there enough to hi-lite the flowers.

I have a set of these old ribbon labels and decided it was time to use them. The ribbon looks blue but it is dark turquoise as well.

Peter’s card.

   Unfortunately, he has not had an easy life as he has been a paraplegic for over 50 years. He ran his own business for years though but his body finally decided it was time to rest so he is in a nursing home. The good news is his mind is fine for someone turning 85. So, I always have a problem making just the right card for him every year.

 

This time I decided to a bit of a mixed media card. This is a 5.5 square card and the card base is Kraft brown. The bottom layer looks pink but it’s a pinkish/brown colour with the edges inked in brown. Then I pulled out a darker brown and cut a square; then mounted the brown polka dot square on top. Then I took a piece of darker brown paper and ripped the edges and glued that on. Then there is a wide ribbon with the edges frayed. The sentiment was die cut twice - once in white and once in blue and then the blue one was glued to the white but offside so the white is a shadow. The lighthouse was stamped and hand cut. This is an old Stampin' Up stamp but I didn’t buy the dies - darn! The lighthouse had to sit on something so I took another piece of brown paper and glued it on with a mesh and paper bit on top. I liked the texture. Then I added three tiny shells. I had to put extra postage on it because of the shells but that’s okay. He is worth it.

Three Cards Today

 It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a card. The weather decided to give us about a week of summer temperatures and it was just too nice out to sit inside. So besides biking, hiking and working on the garden, there was not much time….. or energy left … for anything else. Removing all the dead annuals in the fall is no where near as much fun as planting them in the spring. I’m definitely cutting back on the gardening next year!

 So, today I’m posting three cards because they were all made using the same die, but different embellishments. Here they are.

                                     

The die cuts out that long stitched panel plus the three small ones.   Then I had to make the background and find elements to fit inside - I enjoyed doing that. It also cuts out the inner panel and squares so that makes it easy to reassemble. This rose on the long panel is a die that out of sparkly red/purple glitter paper. It’s not bright red, not really purple either but I looked nice cut out so I went with it. Then I found some Stampin' Up flower stamps that I decided would look nice in the small panels so they were stamped and then the sentiment was stamped. Once it was mounted on the card base I decided the die cut rose needed a little extra so diamond Stickles was squirted and moved around inside the petals and the leaves….nice! Then a few gems were added.

Next card:

                                        
Once again I die cut the panels and inked the backgrounds to match. Then I stamped the flower in the long panel and decided to do silhouettes in two of the squares. All stamps were from various Stampin' Up stamps. Then I stamped the sentiment - no idea where that sentiment is from. The flower  and leaves were blending in with the background too much so I smeared some Distress Ink on a pad and used a paint brush to colour in the flower and leaves. Much better. It was mounted on a light green card base that seemed to compliment the background.

 On to card number three.

                                          
As I was flipping through my flower stamps I found this one that looks like a dandelion gone to seed. Perfect for a birthday card. Once again I used the same process of die cutting the panels and then creating the backgrounds. This time all the flowers were stamped in black ink as was the sentiment. Once it was assembled and glued to the green card base, I added some gems. It’s hard to see in the photo but I used a fancy sparkle pen and made little dots in the the flower heads. The top one shows this the best but it is much better in real life.

An Older but Favourite Stamp

 We are in the middle of a heat warning now! Temperatures in the 90’s and with the humidity it feels like 104F….and will remain so until the end of the week! So much for Canada being cold! It’s hard to even breathe outside so we stayed in the cool house today. I headed down down to the lower studio (aka the basement) where I make my cards. Joe had a pile of laundry to do.

 A couple of weeks ago I decided to cut up all my stamp sets! Yup, cut them all apart. Why you ask? Well because I was making a card and I needed a sentiment and I knew I had just the one I wanted but couldn’t remember which stamp set it was in. I thought it was in with some flower stamps but no, it was with a butterfly stamp set. I bet I spent over half and hour just looking for that sentiment. That was the last straw. I started cutting up my stamps. Any stamp sets that had a sentiment had the sentiment removed and then did the same for any obvious birthday image stamps, like presents and bows, etc. I put all and every birthday sentiment and image stamp onto photo paper - yes, they stick to photo paper - that I had adhered to a piece of cardboard - mostly cereal boxes! And they are now stored in a binder.  By the way, I just used photo paper from the dollar store, not the good stuff.

Then I did the same for thinking of you sentiments. However, before I could do the other categories I got hit with that nasty trigeminal neuralgia attack that put me on the couch for a week and went I went back down, the enthusiasm had waned. I need to back more photo paper onto cardstock and Just didn’t feel like it. So, the other sentiments are sorted and set to one side for now.  Have you ever done that? Started a project and then half way through you think, “Why did I start this!” I’ll get back to it when I feel better….I’m better than I was last week but it takes awhile to get completely over these attacks….especially when I refuse to take strong meds for them and I just have to ride it out.

So today I’m posting a very old Stamping Bella stamp that I pull out and colour every once in awhile. I makes me chuckle.

                                   

It was coloured with pencils and blended with gamsol. The sky was sponged with chalk. The birthday sentiment is a black peel-off and the sentiment on the banner was computer generated.

A Humourous Card Today

 Yesterday and today were perfect summer weather days. We enjoyed just relaxing, and reading, at Mitchell’s Bay this afternoon. We love being out by the lake, any lake or river actually. Tomorrow is another story - another thunderstorm coming.

 I’ve actually been under attack of the brain disorders, primarily trigeminal neuralgia, for the last couple of days - for no reason except the atmospheric pressure changed quite rapidly. So, yesterday, it was time to go down to the lower studio (aka the basement) and fill in some time making cards. I needed a few humourous birthday cards so here is one I came up with.

 

 I’ve had this stamp for years and everyone once in awhile I pull it out and colour it up. This one was coloured with water based markers. I rubbed the markers on an acrylic block and with a watercolour pen I was able to add ink to the stamped image. This was stamped on just regular white cardstock so I couldn’t use too much water. I should have stamped it on water colour paper but didn’t, so I had to improvise. The sentiment and musical notes are from two different sets but they seem to fit the scene. This is 4.5 inch square card.

A Butterfly Card

 Another rainy Saturday! No bike ride today. In fact, I did very little today. The low atmospheric pressure triggers spasms from my two brain disorders and the concentration level and inspiration level is a bit low today. So, we had a quiet Saturday. Joe beat me soundly playing Rummy-0 - which is a game with tiles similar to the card game Rummy. Its our favourite new game….even though I lose more often than I win.

 Today I’m posting a card made by combining bits and pieces from a 6” paper pack. Its my usual way to use up those left over pieces, but still make a beautiful card.

                                      

The background is one large piece and I made a card base that closely matched the red leaves. To break up that pattern, I strip of beige was placed down the left side. It matches the beige leaves. I wrapped glitter thread around and around and glued it down and then glued that butterfly on top of the thread. The sentiment is a silver peel-off that is on a strip from the same cardstock as the base card. It was placed on another strip that was from the same paper pack. I just punched the corners to add interest. Because it was from the same paper pack, all the colours match.

Aqua Card Number 9

 It’s spring weather - finally! We are still getting a lot more rain than we normally do but at least its warmer now.

Before I post today’s card which will be Aqua card number 9, I will try to explain the last card a little better. I had a comment on the blog’s last post that questioned how I made the strips float.  Comments and questions are always welcome.

So, as a review, here’s Aqua Card number 8 that was posted last week.

As I posted, the strips were glued to a piece of stiff plastic, like a transparency; leaving a space in between them. Then the piece was flipped over and dimensional strips were glued to just the back of the strips and then it was glued to the card base.

However, it’s very hard to see the dimension in the photo so I took another photo while holding it on its side. Perhaps this will explain why the strips look like they are floating.

 And now for Aqua Card number 9.

More strips being used.  This time I just taped the strips together at the back with a thin 1/8” strip of dark aqua in between them until it reached 5.25 inches. Then I taped the dark aqua strips to either side; and added the silver peel-off strips to the side; and then glued the whole thing as one piece to a light blue card base. The fancy scrolled circle die is an old one that I‘ve had in my stash for ages and seldom use. It was die cut out of light blue cardstock and it was fine as it was but I wanted a little more dimension so I die cut a circle frame from matching cardstock and glued that on. The sentiment is a silver peel-off. I may use this as a template for future cards as I quite like how it turned out.

 One more Aqua card to post but that’s for another day.

Aqua Card number 8

 Brrrrr. It’s cold and rainy yet again today. Spring is taking its sweet time arriving this year. Joe keeps telling me that we will go from this weather right into above average hot and humid temperatures…no real casual flow into summer. He’s probably right but I’ll take hot and humid over cold any day.

 Today is Aqua card Number 8. I finally used up most of the paper and was left with strips! I had to use them all up.

                                               

So this is my take on the floating card technique. I took  a piece of transparent or likely plastic from a package and cut it 4 x 5.25 inches so it would fit on a standard A2 card with a border showing. Luckily I had the right colour blue card base to use. The strips were cut 4” long by about 1/2” and the edges were inked with aqua ink. Then they were glued onto the plastic leaving a space in between them. Then I flipped it over and dimensional strips were glued to the back of the plastic behind the strips and it was glued to the card base. A gold peel-off sentiment was added and a few gold flowers but it needed something else. So I die cut a floral spray out of gold and glued that on as well. Perfect. Cards made from left over pieces don’t have to look blah!

Aqua Card 4 and some flowers

 Well, it still cold and rainy here in Ontario which is pretty normal for April weather….but we are so ready for a real spring! That one week we had of above normal temperatures was such a tease. But, the tulips and daffodils and other spring bulbs are loving this weather. I have a few uncommon daffodils. Here are a few of them.

Today's card is after the flowers so if you don't like flowers, just scroll on down!

                    

This one has light petals but a dark yellow trumpet.

This one has white petals; light yellow trumpet but a pinkish-orange frill at the end of the trumpet. 

This one is my favourite. White petals; light yellow trumpet but a dark reddish-orange, almost red, frill at the end. It looks like a narcissus, but its not.

 They are not blooming yet.

And I have a lot of the common ones too.

This is a double daffodil. I don't have many of these.

     AND NOW FOR THE CARD.

Today’s card is card number 4 in the Aqua challenge I gave myself.

 

The background is from the 6”paper pack and cut down to 4 x 5.25 to fit on a standard A2 card base. The butterfly is from a different package but also from the dollar store. This butterfly was huge and I wasn’t sure what to do with it but once I laid it on the card, I really liked it. Once it was glued down I cut off the bits hanging off the card. I like this look. I did not like the butterfly’s body and head so I die cut a new one using a very, very old Quickutz die. I added some white hi-lites down the back of the body with a white gel pen.  The birthday sentiment is a black peel-off on a matching blue hand cut fishtail banner.

This is the last of the big butterflies. The remaining cards are quite different.
