Lest We Forget

Lest we forget! This is Remembrance Day in Canada where we pay tribute to all those who have fought in war to defend our freedom, especially those who did not return home but died in battle, like my Uncle Frank Harvey Willett who died at age 23 just before the end of the war.

     We woke up to the first snowfall of the season and its still falling. I was worried there would not be very many people at the cenotaph because of the bad weather but once again it was packed. It was a cold, wet snow falling and it was pretty miserable standing out in it, but I kept thinking that the soldiers couldn’t take the day off because of the weather so I stayed.

     So today, I’m not posting a card but I will post this Remembrance Day plaque I painted a few years ago that I hang by the front door every year. It’s painted on slate.

I’ll be back on Wednesday with another card.

Lest We Forget

Today was Remembrance Day here in Canada and Joe and I attended the ceremony at the cenotaph. There was a very large crowd there this year which was so good to see. We cannot let the fallen soldiers think we have forgotten them.

 

So there is no post today of any crafted item except the wall plaque I painted last year for Remembrance Day. I painted this in memory of my mother's youngest brother who died in action  in WWII just before the war ended. He was only 23 years old. Cpl. Frank Harvey Willett. May he rest in peace.

 

 

My brother Frank, his namesake, inherited these medals and his family had them professionally mounted for him.

Lest We Forget

LEST WE FORGET

There will be no post today in respect for all the soldiers who died fighting for our rights and freedom. My thoughts are especially with my uncle, Frank Harvey Willett, who died just before the end of the war at age 23. He is buried in Italy and if I ever win the lottery I am going to go to Italy to visit his grave. Unfortunately because of my brain disorders I am not allowed to fly so it will be very expensive to go by ship and train. That is the only thing that is on my bucket list.

This is one of the few pictures we have of him. He lived with my parents, as did his mother and siblings, and their house burnt to the ground two weeks before I was born, a year after Frank was killed so only a handful of photos survived.

 

 

Last year I painted poppies on a piece of slate and it hangs on our front porch from Nov 1 until Nov 11 in his memory. This is the painting.

 

My thoughts and prayers also go to all the innocent civilians who perished during the wars. When are people going to learn that war and violence is not the answer to any problem.
