Busy but Rewarding Weekend

Ohhhh, I feel a hundred years old tonight – at least my back does. We are finally having seasonal temperatures in the mid 70’s so we took full advantage of it this weekend. Saturday we went hiking at Point Pelee; Sunday we went biking (20km) plus walked some trails; today we pulled out all the Forget-Me-Nots and planted about half the bedding plants. I’m so not used to physical labour!

On Saturday I told Joe that we would not likely see many birds we had not seen earlier this year but if we saw even one new bird or got a great picture of one, whether we’ve seen it before or not, the day would go from a nice walk through the bush to a GREAT day. We did GREAT. We saw a Blackpoll warbler that we had not seen yet this year – and an okay photo – and Gray Cat Birds were all over and I got another nice shot of one of them - but then we saw a huge flock of Dunlins (we’ve never ever seen them) and got a good photo of them as well. I had no clue what they were so I sent a photo over to another birding friend, Irene, and she identified it for us. Here are the photos. I decided last week that I needed to make a card using a new-to-me technique. So first I stamped the dragonflies (HOTP) on velum with Versamark ink and heat embossed them with white embossing powder. Then I took a very old Stampin’ Up stamp and just used one part of it to stamp and emboss the little flowers and dots. Then I flipped it over and coloured the back of the images with alcohol markers. Then it was glued to a green checked paper. You can’t tell by the photo but the bottom left blue dragonfly does not have the wings glued down. There is a complete dragonfly underneath of it so when you see it sideways there is an image there. I simply stamped and embossed one dragonfly on an extra piece of velum and cut it out and just glued on a strip of dimensional tape down the body leaving the wings free. The small sentiment came with this dragonfly set (about $1.29 at Paper Wishes) and it says, “fluttering by to say hi” and it was stamped and embossed with white as well on white cardstock Cuttlebug die cut tag and then ink was sponged on top to reveal the words. The blue ribbon was strung through it and taped to the back before gluing the piece to the card base.
