It was a pretty mild day here today but the rain is moving in. Hopefully nothing like California got but we are under a rain storm warning which means potential flooding.
I’m switching things up today and posting two different quilts…. well, one quilt and some quilt blocks I made to donate to the organization that is making quilts for the survivors of the Residential Schools. They wanted large 16” blocks made that they finish into quilts and each one is to have a bit of orange in it. I made mine with masculine fabric because they were short on quilts for men. Here’s a sample of a few that I made.
Luckily I found a great pattern for 16” blocks on the Pinterest. They will look better once the sashings are put between them but I don’t always remember to take pictures of the quilts I make. One of our local fabric stores closed in November and had a lot of fabric on sale. I went in and picked up some more fabric suitable for these quilts. My husband shook his head one day and said, “You have enough projects on the go to last 50 years”. I just laugh and shrug and tell him that the number will never go down because I finish one project and start two more. More head shaking.
Now here is a quilt top that I did remember to photograph. It’s called a ‘string’ quilt because it is made from small strips of fabric - a great way to use up scraps and its pretty easy to make - not much math or thinking involved.
The quilt guild knows I like to make scrappy quilts so they brought over a bin of fabric pieces and asked me to make some quilts for them. The box was full of Batik fabric - awesome bright colours and patterns that us quilters love to get our hands on. This is one of six I made last year from the bin (I told you I always forget to photograph the quilts). I have the blocks for one more cut out (different design) but not sewn together yet. These are called comfort quilts and they go to local residents that are fighting a life-threatening disease, like cancer, or a fire or some other tragedy. The rules are pretty loose. I’ve delivered a few to such residents, one just before Christmas, to a lady just starting her treatment for breast cancer….she was moved to tears that we do this….as many are. Its their appreciation that we keep making them. We give out over 100 each year and we also make quilts for kids with cancer. These go to Sick Kids in London and we normally send down about 125 quilts to them each year. I have three quilts cut out for them too but not sewn together. So many hobbies, not enough time.
That’s all for a mild Monday, January 16, 2023. I’ll be back with a card for the next post so I hope you tune in again.
Cheers
Violet
