Crows, Tombstones and Skulls

I’ve started to make my Halloween cards. All my family loves Halloween and they still want cards so I got started on them while we had over 48 hours of rain. I only have three complete though. I’m not a fast card maker mainly because I don’t use sketches or plan anything out ahead of time. I just go with what moves me at the moment. Here’s the first one.

The background was created with many Distress Inks and then splattered with water and then almost immediately I placed a cloth over the image to remove the water. This leaves those lovely whitish spots that give it so much interest. To make the moon I simply place a piece of plastic that has a circle cut out where I want the moon to be. I take a small sponge and dampen it with water - dampen, not soaked - and then while holding down the plastic I run the sponge around; drying with a cloth every once in awhile until I get the desired affect. If the moon is not yellow enough, I just sponge on some yellow Distress ink but because Distress Ink is translucent, the mottled background still shows. If some water seeks under the plastic; I place the solid circle over the moon and then add some blue Distress ink around it. There is likely an easier and quicker way to do this but I just like the look of the moon doing it this way. This was all done on water colour paper and once I liked the background, the edges were scuffed up and then inked black. I like the distress look.

The crow and the tombstone are old Sizzix dies. I like putting these together. The crow’s tail feathers stick out further than the standard card I made so I will have to remember to put it in a larger envelope.

The skull is from Tim Holtz and it was stamped twice and hand cut - no dies for these ones…I glued the two together to make it stronger. There was a very light sponging of blue on a couple spots on the skull but it pretty much was left black and white. Then I decided it needed something else so black grass was die cut and added along the bottom and a bit tucked in behind the skull. It is mounted on a light green card base although very little of it shows on the front.

That’s all for a lovely Friday on September 24, 2021. It didn’t rain today so we got the grass cut and the windows and porch washed. Its supposed to start raining tonight and most of tomorrow but hopefully not as windy so it shouldn’t blow debris up on the porch. Have a wonderful, safe and creative weekend everyone.

Cheers

Violet
